Neopolitan Cake Bars (With a twist)

My good friends know I am not the best baker in town, but I sure can cook. So when I saw this recipe on Picky Palate, it looked pretty simple and I thought "I could do this easily". Well, I thought wrong. I started off great, I mean its just cake mix, butter, and egg. Here is where it went a little wrong, I put it in the oven for 40 minutes, however it was suppose to go in the oven for 50 minutes. I did not let the cake cool down enough, (I have no patience) before I cut into it and it started to fall apart. So I put it in the fridge to let it cool completely.
Of course I wanted to do something a little different, so for the chocolate layer instead of doing the chocolate cake mix I did a simple ganach and drizzled it on top. I think it turned out pretty good! hopefully my friends will agree.

Recipe adapted from Picky Palate

  • 1 box vanilla cake mix
  • 1 box strawberry cake mix
  • 2 sticks butter, softened
  • 2 eggs
  • 14 oz can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 1/4 cup chocolate chip morsels
  • 1/2 cup milk
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a 9X13 inch baking pan with foil and spray with cooking spray.
2. Combine the vanilla cake, 1 stick of butter and 1 egg and mix with hands. Press on the bottom of the pan.
3. Combine the strawberry cake, 1 stick of butter and 1 egg and mix with hands. Press on the bottom of the pan.
4. Drizzle 3/4  cup sweetened condensed milk over strawberry layer and bake for 45- 50 minutes, center should be cooked all the way through. Let cool completely.
5. While cooling in a double boiler melt the chocolate morsels, add the milk and mix until well combined.
6 Cut the bars the shape you want them and drizzle the chocolate over the bars and serve.
